Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Tennessee Performing Arts Center

In 2019, first showing at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 motion picture Moulin Rouge was transformed into the iconic live staging in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was given more life by award-winning cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who embodied the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and creative experts including director Alex Timbers and music scoring and medleys by Justine Levine, behind the scenes.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show full of happiness amidst tragic love that presents to us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the height of Bohemianism, during the period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, tries to find his dream and inspiration. He hopes to start a chance to succeed as a writer and travels to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to create a play that they can put on. It is in the underworld of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge that catches his eye and heart. Their budding relationship however faces a haughty competitor in the person of the boastful and greedy Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in exchange for a large financial investment to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So starts Christian and Satine’s tale of love and loss on the Broadway stage.

Essentially a love affair that remains a sure favorite in current times, Moulin Rouge is also a mixture of both old and new music, incorporating arrangements not just from the original film adaptation, but also song mash-ups and renditions from modern songs that were woven into the narrative of the play.
