Hairspray at Tennessee Performing Arts Center

The Tennessee Performing Arts Center is thrilled to be hosting one of the greatest theatre that has been capturing people’s hearts since 2002. For just over two decades Hairspray has grown into a show every musical lovers have on their theater bucket list. The iconic Marc Shaiman compiled the music and created the lines along with John Waters for the well known tunes that have become iconic phrases that theater lovers across the world know. The stage will light up to introduce Baltimore local Tracy Turnblad, the happy-go-lucky, curvy teenage girl that has wishes and a soul that are larger than her her dress size.

The story starts - It is 1962 and Tracy has hopes of appearing on the local TV dance show, The Corny Collins Show, but is met with no, it can’t happen. Yet, Tracy proves people wrong and after winning a role in the show with her plucky boldness and swinging hips and becoming a star overnight. But she realizes that there are injustices in her hometown that she cannot stand by. What will unfold when Tracy and her friends and family fight against the wrongs in their hometown?
