With rampant corruption, unemployment, and abuse in the 1800s in Paris, a convicted criminal known by the name of Jean Valjean escapes his parole after almost two decades imprisoned. Due to the actions of a good samaritan, he is free to fully escape the law and adopts a new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, eventually achieving a life as a factory owner and a mayor. Though initially successful in building his new life, hidden from his antagonist Javert, Jean Valjean is inevitably drawn in the uprising of the commoners of Paris, wherein he is forced to find answers that would change the lives of the people around him forever.
This story of Les Misérables, filled with justice and redemption, has been running for several decades in a number of locations over many different countries. Ever since its first showing in French theatre in the late 20th century, it has deservingly been referred to not only as part of the most awesome musicals of all time, but also one of the shows with the most awards as well. In 1987 alone, it dominated the awards season of the Tony Awards, with 12 nominations in total and 8 out of 12 wins. The musical won as Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actor and Actress in a Musical, Best Scenic Design, and Best Lighting Design. Afterwards, the box office hit proceeded to garner awards and commendations in its new productions in Broadway, Toronto, and Australian revivals comprising of the Helpmann Awards, Dora Awards, Green Room Awards, and as expected, the Tony Awards once more.
