Set in two iconic decades of the 1900s, specifically the 1980s and 1950s, The stage adaptation, Back To The Future, features the beloved story from the late 80s movie and was also adapted for the stage by the movie's originators, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale. The high-spirited and colorfully loud play tells the story of Marty McFly, a fearless boy who is sent back in time.
The story is set in motion as Marty McFly lives a regular day in a young man's life, enjoying his hobbies (especially in Marty's music group) and spending time with the McFly family, all while being utterly inquisitive of the things he finds. His curiosity ends up as Marty's single inconvenience, as upon connecting with Doc Brown on a fateful night, Brown explains that his genius has enabled him to make the time machine (which is actually the DeLorean) work. A sudden emergency that occurs on that night pressures Marty to accidentally turn on the device, shocking Marty and carrying him away to the year 1955. At first in awe of the town and people he doesn't know, Marty soon realizes that to return to the right place and time, he must also redirect the past, and his mother and father who have yet to fall in love, back to the right track.
With similar creatives from the feature film it was adapted from, each set of the legendary show acts as respect and acknowledgment of the set designs from the previous movie, incorporating Hill Valley High School, Doc’s lab, the McFly’s house, and many locales in the Hill Valley neighborhood. Both the stage and clothing creations also accurately depict the two different time periods. The musical's shift to the theater platform expanded the viewership of one of the ultimate franchises of all time, while applying changes and innovations made possible in a live theater production.
