Set specifically during the period concurrent with the 1832 French rebellion in Paris, the musical, Les Misérables is the life story of Jean Valjean, a resident of Paris, France who was pronounced guilty for close to 20 years due to a small act of theft for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he escapes and looks for a second chance to live his life; Jean Valjean then adopts a different identity as Monsieur Madeleine, while still constantly being pursued by his nemesis, Javert, an officer loyal to the letter of the law and determined to catch and bring the ex-convict face the consequences of his previous escape.

Taking place over a period of roughly two decades covered by its 2-hour and 50-minute run, Valjean is entangled by accidental means with numerous key figures throughout the show – Fantine is one of Jean Valjean's factory laborers who is the mother of an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the foster child of Jean Valjean, who by no surprise Fantine’s infant; Marius, a young Frenchman on the side of the rebellion and the love interest of Cosette. Other characters shown in the musical are the Thénardiers, abusive innkeepers who pay no heed to their daughter and are consumed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their daughter, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and supporters of the rebellion namely Gavroche, a small but cunning child, and the rebellion’s leader, Enjolras.

This vibrant group of characters who meet by fate and their personal hardships are brought to life on stage, not just with the show's 19th century French-inspired outfit and prop creations, but distinctly with Les Mis being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With famous numbers such as “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as part of its astounding song list, Les Mis is able to portray the underlying motives hidden deep in every character that plays out beautifully on stage.
