In its tour over a number of cities in the United States, London’s West End, and Australia to name a few, the Broadway hit has been met with an remarkable reception from audiences and sold-out shows. The Book of Mormon is a musical comedy about religious teachings and stories, specifically Mormon missionaries named Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, as they are ordered to represent and preach their religion’s faith and teachings to a small local village in Uganda. They discover however, that the villagers are indifferent to their preaching, as they face issues of their own. The pair then clash because of their methods to convert the locals, with Cunnigham’s often involving adding fiction and fantasy to his religious teachings.
To date, The Book of Mormon has won several awards in both Broadway and West End, including nine Tony Awards out of fourteen total nominations, including for Best Musical (received right after its opening night in 2011), four Drama Desk Awards, and three Outer Circle Critics awards. Across the pond, in the West End production of the musical which debuted in 2013 at the Prince of Wales theatre, it won four Laurence Olivier Awards again including for Best Musical. Then from the other side of the world, from the Australian tour in 2017, it also won two Helpmann Awards that also included for Best Musical.
Commercially, The Book of Mormon has also achieved unforgettable monetary success with more than 4,600 performances as of the end of alst year. It has raked in over $1 billion dollars worldwide, and was even favored by the church through purchases of ad space, billboards, bus advertising space, and other marketing campaigns in the several cities in which the show toured.
