Synopsis
We all remember the popular middle and high school English-class staple.
We fell in love with Ponyboy Curtis, we went on an emotional rollercoaster of youth with him, and even identified with some of the scuffles of the have-nots in a world of have-its. We dreamt small-town dreams with them, we walked the road of brutality, addiction, depression, and socio-economic struggles beside them, with the storyline and themes hitting us where it matters.
Add a spoonful of that folk-meets-indie-ish music to the retro classic, stir it with rich voices, colour it with a gritty, visceral spin, and top it with a generous dose of exhilarating choreography and powerful visual vignettes, and you have a fantastic musical production that walks in the footsteps of the literary legacy, with an award-shelf groaning heavily under the load of some of the most sought-after awards, including four Tony Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Theatre World Award, and a Chita Rivera Award.
